Labour Party, the
`Labour ,Party, the
one of the three main political parties in the U.K., originally started to try to improve conditions for working people. After many years in the 1980s and 1990s when it did not get elected as a government, the party made its policies less left-wing and began to call itself New Labour. The Labour party was elected as the government in 1997 and again in 2001.
